Saint Brigid’s Cross History
Since the 500’s, the Saint Brigid’s Cross has been connected with the timeless folk traditions of Ireland. Throughout Ireland, the cross is affiliated with the arrival of the season of Spring and with St. Brigid, a native of Kildare. Due to the association between the cross and Spring, St. Brigid’s day has been celebrated on February 1st for centuries.
The hand-weaving of the Saint Brigid’s Cross at the beginning of Spring is an ancient Irish custom. The cross is made from rushes which are harvested from Ireland’s longest river, the river Shannon, and are then cut to length.
The cross is linked to Christianity through a story involving a pagan chieftain from County Kildare in Ireland.
The chieftain was dying and Brigid was sent for to speak to him about Christ. Brigid arrived and tried to talk to the chieftain but it proved to be quite difficult. She sat down at his bedside.
Typically at that time the floors were covered with rushes to keep the floor warm and clean. While sitting down she began to weave some of the rushes into a cross. The chieftain questioned what Brigid was doing and she explained the cross to him. The chieftain was very curious and was converted to Christianity and baptised before his death.

Pat Pedersen –
Thank you so much for the St. Brigid’s Cross. We were in Ireland at the end of August for 2 weeks and saw these at a vendor along a roadside. We figured we would get one at a gift shop and totally forgot about it. When we arrived home I searched the web and your small business had exactly what I wanted. It is just as pictured and came carefully wrapped and arrived safely intact to Iowa in the US. Highly recommend your small business and wish you the best. Thank you again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
